In a colorful ceremony marked by jubilation and optimism, President William Ruto officially commissioned the much-awaited Nandi Hills Water Supply and Sanitation Project on Saturday, 17 August 2024. The project, implemented by the Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency (CRVWWDA) on behalf of the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency (LVSWWDA), is set to provide a sustainable water and sanitation solution for over 30,000 residents of Nandi Hills and itsenvirons.
The event, held at Nandi Hills, was graced by top government officials, local leaders, and a host of community members. Governor Stephen Sang of Nandi County, who has been a strong advocate for development projects in the region, was present alongside other county leaders to witness the significant milestone.
Speaking during the ceremony, President Ruto emphasized his administration’s commitment to ensuring that all regions of Kenya have access to clean and reliable water. He lauded the Agency for the timely delivery of the project.
"This project is a testament to our vision of delivering essential services to all corners of Kenya. Access to clean water is not just a basic need, but a right. We are committed to ensuring that every Kenyan has this access," President Ruto said.
CRVWWDA Chairman Hon. Mathenge Ndiritu while addressing the Agency’s Media team at the event, thanked the government for its unwavering support in seeing the project to completion. He highlighted the technical expertise and dedication of the teams involved, including Acting CEO CPA Douglas Murei and Director Kirui, who were both instrumental in delivering the project on time and within budget.
Governor Sang praised the initiative, expressing hope that the project would significantly improve the quality of life for Nandi Hills residents, particularly in the areas of health, agriculture, and economic growth. "This project will change lives by ensuring our people have reliable water access. It's a new chapter for Nandi County," he said.
The water supply project is expected to serve thousands of households and institutions in the region, enhancing agricultural productivity and improving sanitation standards. With this commissioning, the government continues to demonstrate its focus on infrastructure as a catalyst for development across the country.
As the ceremony concluded with vibrant cultural performances and cheers from the gathered crowd, it was clear that the Nandi Hills Water Supply Project is a step toward transforming the region's future, bringing renewed hope and progress to the people of Nandi.
The Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Eng. Erick Mugaa, accompanied by Principal Secretary Julius Korir and Water Secretary SAO Alima, paid a courtesy visit the Agency in Nakuru. They were warmly welcomed by the Chairman of the Board, Hon. Mathenge Ndiritu, and Chief Executive Officer, CPA Douglas Murei.
The discussions focused on the pressing challenges facing water provision in the region, including water scarcity, the effects of climate change on water resources, and the urgent need for sustainable water management. Eng. Mugaa emphasized the crucial role CRVWWDA plays in providing clean and safe water, particularly in areas experiencing rapid urban and rural population growth.
Key achievements in flagship projects were also discussed, such as the expansion of water supply systems such as Last Mile Connectivity Project and the rehabilitation of aging infrastructure such as the anticipated Lake Nakuru Biodiversity Project which ensures efforts are vital in ensuring long-term water security in the region.

The Chemususu Dam, a crucial water reservoir, has long been a lifeline for the residents of Baringo. However, many communities have struggled with limited access to this vital resource. The Last Mile Connectivity project aims to bridge this gap by extending water supply networks to reach the most remote and underserved areas of the county.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Ruto highlighted the transformative impact of the project. “Today marks a new chapter for Baringo County. This project is not just about water; it’s about health, education, and economic empowerment. Musa Kiptoo, a resident of one of the newly connected areas, shared his joy, saying, “For years, we have struggled to get enough water for our daily needs. The Chemususu Last Mile Connectivity project is expected to benefit over 50,000 residents, enhancing their quality of life and fostering sustainable development in the region. In a historic event marking a significant milestone for the residents of Oyugis, President William Ruto officially commissioned the Oyugis Water Supply and Sanitation Project. The project, which promises to address the long-standing water challenges in the region, was greeted with enthusiasm from local leaders and residents alike.
The commissioning ceremony, held on August 29, 2024, was attended by a host of high-profile politicians and dignitaries who turned out in large numbers to celebrate the realization of this crucial project. Among the attendees were the Governor of Homa Bay County H. E Gladys Wanga, area MPs, Senators, and a delegation from the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation led by the Cabinet Secretary Eng. Eric Mugaa. Each leader expressed their support and appreciation for the development, acknowledging its potential to transform the lives of thousands of residents.
In his speech, President Ruto lauded the completion of the Oyugis Water Supply and Sanitation Project as a reflection of his government’s commitment to improving essential services in all parts of the country. He emphasized the importance of water as a fundamental human right and a key driver of economic development, particularly in rural areas like Oyugis.
"The Oyugis Water Supply and Sanitation Project will ensure that clean, safe, and reliable water is available to all residents of this region," said the President. "This project is not just about water; it is about improving health, empowering communities, and fostering sustainable development."
The Oyugis Water Supply and Sanitation Project, implemented by the Central Rift Valley Water Works development Agency on behalf of Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency was funded by the African Development Bank and the Government of Kenya.
The Scope of Works includes an extensive network of water pipelines, treatment plants, and storage facilities. The project will serve both Oyugis town and the surrounding areas, benefiting over 100,000 people. It also incorporates a modern sanitation system aimed at reducing waterborne diseases and improving overall hygiene standards in the region.
The Agency Chairman Hon. Mathenge Ndiritu who was conspicuously present at the event echoed the President's sentiments, stating the Agency worked tirelessly through challenges that include Covid-19 to ensure timely completion. He also appreciated the collaborative effort between various government agencies to ensure its success. He described the project as a "game-changer" for the people of Oyugis, highlighting how it would alleviate the daily struggles faced by residents in accessing clean water.
"This project will change our lives," said Jasphone Ochieng, a local resident. "For years, we have struggled with water shortages, but now we can look forward to a brighter future with clean and sufficient water for all. We thank you for prioritizing our region and delivering on this promise."
As a significant and strategic player in the Water and Sanitation domain, the Agency is participating in the three-day Water and Sanitation Investors Conference (WASIC) at KICC, alongside other stakeholders.
Officiated by the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Zachary Njeru, the event is aimed at fostering open discussions, partnerships and funding to ensure sustainable access to water and sanitation services for all Kenyans.
As part of its commitment to advancing sustainable water and sanitation solutions, the Agency is utilizing the platform to highlight past, ongoing, and future projects, while also seeking financial backing from the Private Public Partnerships program.
Head of the delegation to both the conferences and the exhibition is the acting GM Corporate Services Mr. Vincent Inganji on behalf of the acting CEO CPA Douglas Murei. Also present are Carlos Cheluget, Philip Kimeli, Lucy Mburu, Ronny Cheruiyot, Sally Ogeya, Kennedy Kurgat and Rachael Njambi. The event runs until Friday 8th March 2024.
The Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency (CRVWWDA) is one of the nine (9) Water Works Development Agencies in Kenya and was formed under Section 65 of the Water Act, 2016. It was established through Kenya Gazette Notice No. 4 dated 7thFebruary 2020. The region served by the Agency comprise of the five Counties of Nakuru, Narok, Laikipia, Baringo and Nyandarua.
